My name is Jon Tollefson, and I am running to be Minnesota’s next State Auditor.
I grew up in Hopkins, MN and am a proud graduate of Hopkins public schools. I now live in the Victory neighborhood of North Minneapolis with my husband Josh and our mini goldendoodle, Jujubee.
I have always been drawn to public service, and I was fortunate to develop that interest early by serving on the Hopkins School District Budget Committee and on the council at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minnetonka.
I went to Washington, DC for my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at George Washington University, and later became a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. State Department. I served as a visa officer in Lagos, Nigeria, and as an American Citizen services officer in Mexico City, ensuring the well-being of U.S. Citizens imprisoned throughout Mexico. I also served as outreach officer for Somalia and an on-the-record spokesperson while in the Africa Bureau at State Department headquarters where I helped lead the strategic resource planning process for the Bureau to set budget priorities for Congressional review.
I have also been a long-time advocate for the rights of LGBT people, both here at home and abroad. I served as president of GLIFAA (the LGBT employee association of U.S. foreign affairs agencies) from 2010 to 2011, where I helped plan landmark outreach to and increased protection of LGBT people worldwide during a time of significant political change. I later served as Midwest Chair for Victory Fund, a national political organization devoted to electing LGBT people to office. When elected, I will be the first openly LGBT person elected to statewide office in Minnesota.
I now work as a Government Affairs Specialist at the Minnesota Nurses Association where I've had the privilege of fighting to bring single-payer healthcare to our state and nation. I advocate for nurses, healthcare workers, and patients to ensure affordable and equitable access to quality healthcare for all.
